Interesting video. I normally bristle when people unthinkingly criticise the i8, parroting something they half heard, but this was some good questions well asked. I agree with the closing statement.

Also adding: sometimes cars aren't remembered for what they were intended for, think DeLorean DMC12, but what their creators had hoped for... and dihedral doors.

I suppose the question is when would BMW push i8 to be a serious performance car with eco credentials. Currently they aren't doing either of those justice by straddling both petrol and electric delivering mediocre performance. We know it's possible with electric motors and current battery technology.

I just feel like this is another case of where manufacturers can't make up their mind about when is the right time to go all guns blazing towards future technology. Roll on Mission E from Porsche.

Both are flagship cars for BMW and Audi, so in that sense a "natural", albeit slightly unfair, comparison - - if the only metric is performance. If your metric is speed / ltr/km then the i8 will come out better.

I think the reviewer tried to be fair, but he was taken by Audi performance.

It's a fair comparison, but the two cars are chalk and cheese.

The i8 is often compared to far less appropriate cars than this e.g. Tesla Model S

Top gear magazine compared i8 to the Lambo when the i8 came out.

There is really nothing yet that you can truly compare it to

Two interesting comments from the video:

When talking about the drivetrain, “If you’re being copied, you’re doing something right, and no other manufacturer has copied this system.”

The i8 has less power than the M2, with roughly the same 0-100 time. “So when your flagship sports car has less power and the same 0-100 time as your entry-level sports car…you kind of have a bit of an issue.”

This is why I passed on the i8 Roadster. Nearly a $170,000 price tag and sub-par performance. BMW...are you listening????

put a twin turbo v6 in there and it would be a monster.

Matching an i8 against a normally aspirated R8 in a drag race is unfair, facetiously speaking. The i8 should be pitted against the 5.2 V10 Plus or a Porsche GT3 RS!

In all seriousness, the i8, while possessing supercar looks and stance, is one of the most practical sports cars in my view for the everyday drive. Put simply, it's nimble, has ample acceleration on tap, and delivers a GT quality ride to boot.

People complain the i8 isn’t faste nough for its price, but over look that Aston Martin are slower and pricier, despite their sports car appearances.

BTW, a Z06 parked next to me at the Target parking a lot yesterday. People were asking about the i8, and no one even batted an eye at the Z06.

Funny how people still completely miss the point with the i8. What will the R8 be remembered for? A very nice v8 that was as easy to drive as a golf? Stats are irrelevant as far as I’m concerned, the i8 is just so special, undeniably unique and unless you spend millions, one of a kind. Oh and those doors Audi, those doors!!

Z06 Corvettes are everywhere, nowhere as rare as the i8. With only 500 i8 cars sold last year, they are much more rare than a Corvette. Put both on a 1/4 mile track and no one will be asking about the i8.
