Anyone phone gets hot from charging in the car?

Been charging my cell phone using a usbc wire in the car on distance drives and notice after a half hour the phone feels really hot. Never had that issue when charging in my X6M

Yeah I’ve noticed that to be the case. Initially was happening in the mag charger but now with cable happens too.

This has been a common problem in every car with a Qi charger I have ever used. Phone overheating is frequent.

I got one of these and absolutely love it!

I did notice yesterday that if the phone is too hot the car's wireless charger will not charge it, but it does sense it and will remind you to to remove it when you turn the car off (if you have that setting turned on).

My Android phone (S24 Ultra) gets no warmer than on my home charger which is just warm to the touch. Otterbox Defender case; charges fine.

Note: OP notes using a USB-C cable to charge, not the wireless charging tray. I too have noticed phone heating up and showing a charging will resume once phone returns to normal operating temp message.

Overheating is more commonly reported using the QI pad, as above. No type or model of phone specified, or which port, but if it overheats with a USB cable, perhaps the solution is to use the pad. Or use a different cable. Or check the cable elsewhere to see if the phone otherwise overheats. There shouldn't technically be any difference charging with a cable wherever you charge, because the phone itself (most of them) should limit the input to the battery through the USB, but IIR someone has checked the amperage through the USB-C ports in the iX somewhere in the forum.

Slightly off topic but I noticed that iX’s wireless charging pad has cooling vents and I hear some fan noises when my iPhone is charging wirelessly. Do the phones still get hot when charging using the iX’s build-in wireless charger? I turned mine off because I don’t want to constantly charge my phone wirelessly. My phone was getting very hot in my previously owned X5 45e. But the wireless charger there had no cooling vents and no ability to be turned off.

I don't get overheating issues with my phone in the wireless charger in the iX.
I think some models (like iPhones) have more issues than others. Some phone cases cause more issues as well; i use a bumper guard style case with my phone which doesn't cover the back of the phone which can interfere with the phone's ability to cool down.

Mine is an I phone and it has a case, maybe that’s the issue.

The listing has Amazon links to the Magsafe charger and to a black ring. Did you buy the latter too?

I ordered a MagSafe charger from Apple for mine.

That ring is super clever. I did not see that, but I did not need it since I have an Apple iPhone. However, that little ring makes the MagSafe stand work for any type of non-Apple Qi phone.

This is all subjective though. I haven’t had a phone *not* feel warm, sometimes uncomfortably so, when fast charging in the sweet spot (say anything under 60%), regardless of charging method.

What I will say is that with car wireless chargers, often the phone feels hot but also hasn’t charged much (X3, e-tron, XC90, iX). Whereas if I plug-in to USB C PD, the phone will get hot but also go from 20% to 60% in under ten minutes.

Also often these charging pads are exposed to the sun and the phone gets hot that way too. This is actually the only case I’ve encountered where the phone itself complains about being too hot or starts noticeably throttling.

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to order the driver facing version since Etsy is only offering me the straight facing one.

I've seen pictures with black MagSafes but I think they are putting something black over the white Apple MagSafe charger

iPhone 12 Pro Max here and no issues charging either way. I suspect it might get warm while charging and doing some heavy lifting, like running CarPlay.

Running carplay itself isn't horrible, but CarPlay + Maps + Audio will typically do it (which is probably why you're running CP to begin with). Not as bad in the iX as some others as there's more ventilation, but reducing the distance between the coil on the charger and that on the phone is what is key... more distance = more heat, which is why something like a magsafe charger is better (thinner plastic and more accurate position).
