Do you afraid of being rear-ended?

Hello all,

We are looking for a car that we can apply for HOV white sticker and the i3 fit our need. But one thing concern me that I afraid of being rear-ended.
You know, you are braking when you let go the gas pedal. That means the brake light is on. And some careless driver may hit you because your brake light is not on. Does anyone concern about that too? Thanks and sorry if re-post.

The brake lights do come on when you release the accelerator and the car is using regenerative braking. The threshold is set such that it comes on as you would expect it to based on deceleration. Not an issue!

Yep every time you let off the accelerator the brake lights turn on regardless if your hitting the brake pedal. The car basically has an accelerometer and can tell when it's slowing down.

You never have to hit the brake pedal and your brake lights will operate perfectly fine as if you where.

I got rear ended in traffic last month. Car isn't fixed yet but I wouldn't worry about the CA HOV sticker. If you've already got them they'll reissue the stickers for the same car due to them being damaged. I think it costs like 8 bucks. I actually never installed my front one so I have a sticker I can use to replace my damaged one anyways.

The guy who hit me's car insurance said the damage was like $610. lol, yeah right... Lets see what a real body shop says. Parts alone will be close to that. Probably going to take it to one next week. I had some similar damage to an e46 like 10 years ago and it was $2100. Guessing BMW parts didn't get cheaper in that time.

i think OP has a reasonable concern, not because of brake light (it is perfectly fine), but i3's capable to slow down/stop quicker than careless driver behind you.

i got rear ended when i stopped at the signal after exited from freeway. estimate is ~$1800 (refer attached pictures)

Yea had to brake check a $&&?$ driver in the x5 the other night who was tail gating me!

They lit up all 4 tires! Just pisses me off to no end when they ride your ass in a 35 mph zone. Which is also known to be a speed trap.

Long time concern with any BMW. They just have good breaks. I3 for different reasons obviously but its still very quick. Couldn't find actual numbers on the i3 but I had an e46 years ago that was 60-0 in 112ft. That was on par with Porsches of its day and those were stock e46 brakes. The new M3 is down to 99ft and new 911 is 93ft. Haven't driven those new cars but I remember 112 was so quick it actually hurt. I suspect the i3 is a good ways longer than 112.

Also been lightly rear ended. $1800 in damages. Took a few weeks to get the bumper. Luckily backup camera was not damaged otherwise I'm sure it would have been far more.

Got the car back. Damage ended up being right about $1550. $780 in parts rest in labor. Feels good to get her back though. Will enjoy that HOV lane access not having had it for the past few days. Shop was able to save my HOV sticker amazingly. Can't even tell they pulled it off. Kind of thought they didn't replace that middle piece until they showed me the damaged one in the trash.

Had my Tundra in for service today as well and just got the bill. $755 for a brake job and O2 sensor Well at least I didn't have to pay for the i3 repair.

Edmunds claims 60-0 for i3 in 109 ft, and 70-0 in 163 feet which is pretty good.
For comparison, M3 takes 150 ft to go from 70-0.
I'm sure stickier and wider tires would improve on that, but here is the data:
http://www.edmunds.com/bmw/i3/2014/road-test-specs/
http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...e-specs-page-4

Any car can be rear-ended, i3 is no exception.
As long as the hit is not hard enough to break glass the rear hatch door, the repair should be not much worse than for an average car. If the glass hatch breaks, it will get much messier and more expensive:
