BMW debunks Apple car joint project rumors, but i3 may get Apple OS

BIMMERPOST NEWS
Apple debunks Apple car project, but i3 may get Apple OS

COMMENTS

BMW has gone on the record in denying a report from Auto Motor und Sport that BMW is developing a car for Apple. AMS claimed that Apple and BMW were in talks regarding the possibility of developing an electric car based on the BMW i3, in connection with recent rumors that Apple has plans to bring its own car to market by 2020.

Reuters has since reported, however, that BMW denied this:

"We are in regular talks with companies from the IT and telecommunications sector, including Apple, concerning topics like connected vehicles," a BMW spokesperson said in a statement published by Reuters. "Developing or building a car is not a topic of these discussions."

The AMS report also claimed that Apple may be developing an operating system for the BMW i3. BMW did not address this rumor directly, only saying that it was holding "regular talks" with Apple on "topics like connected vehicles." If the AMS rumor holds true, the Apple OS would see heavy integration in the i8:

This would allow not only iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, laptop and Mac computers to communicate and exchange data, but it also could be integrated with the car’s fuel consumption and movement data.

If BMW use this stupid OS, actually disconnect the car with the world rather than connect it to outside.

This doesn't debunk that Apple is working on a car. It's merely an admission from BMW that they're not involved in such a project. You might want to consider revising the title/headline.

The i car app already has much of this functionality.

Car will be out of date in 6 months time if it's apple branded, but then the new model will be identical but have a slightly thinner windscreen and a different charging connector so that every power point built will be obsolete, then when you buy an adaptor it'll flash up on the dashboard saying you need to buy a genuine apple car battery charging lead...

Sigh :

True. But unlike the Microsoft car it won't have the cheapest and crappiest operating system available and won't be hacked 30 seconds after you pull out of your garage.

Ugh, the ignorance in this thread already.

Microsoft OS's aren't insecure POS's. The reason why you hear about Windows security issues more often than Apple ones is because of market share. Why would you bother looking for an exploit or writing a virus/malware for an OS (Mac OS X) that has a 7.11% market share, when you could target the 92.51% share that Microsoft has?

Malware has been released that infects Macs and it's been pretty rough for people who were infected.

I'm surprised they said anything. Normally, when one works with the 'A' company they are sworn to secrecy, sometimes contractually, and you cannot use their name on shipping documents. I agree, Windows is a POS platform and I speak from experience.

I'd buy the apple car if it's dynamic and is priced right.

Tesla Model lll. That's the car that will rock the segment.

Macs suck! The TRUE reason a Windows platform is more susceptible to viruses is backwards compatibility. Apple screws its customers every time they release a new OS because your software from OS IV isn't running on OSX. Meanwhile all the programs from Win95 still run on Win7&8. If you don't know your way around a PC very well and don't mind buying all your specific software every time you get a new OS, then by all means.....go Apple. Ultimately I could care less about crap like this but I would like an M4 that keeps its OEM turbos for more than 150,000. Now that would impress me!
