Smile UK I3 users ....

Hi
Looking at getting an I3 without range extender, seems a fair option but clearly has lower residuals... what range are you getting? Any other comments welcome.
Will be our town car as we have an X3 for longer trips.
thanks in advance

Hi there. I test drove an I3 a few months ago. Loved it. And got really good range with it too. Drove all day, city, country lanes and a busy a50. impossible to drive the thing slowly. Its fast and fun and I still got 75 miles before the petrol engine kicked in! I bet if was carefull I could have made another 10 or 15 miles with it. And without the engine, with it beeing lighter, you might get another 5 miles on top of that. Myself and my wife just didnt like the sound of the petrol engine (like a lawnmower in the distance) but really I am sure for a daily driver you wouldnt even use it very often if you decided to go with the rex. I just had it as a loan while my x3 was in the shop and wanted to drive it until it ran out of juice. Ordering one in 12m time myself.

I also have a REX, and the type of driving you do (highway vs. stop'n'go vs. rural) has tremendous impact on your range. So do the ambient temps, especially when temps drop below 50F and extra energy is consumed to heat the battery pack as well as the interior.

My usual commute (some highway, some rural roads) has produced an average consumption of around 4.5 miles/KWh (from May through November). With 18.8 KWh battery, that yields the average range of 84.6 miles to empty, but REX kicks in with ~6 miles to go, so actual expected electric range would be 78.6 miles.

The farthest I ever went, before REX kicked i,t was exactly 100.0 miles. That was exclusively 20-50mph driving on back roads, in moderate ambient temps.

I had BEV i3 as a loaner, and got 4.9 miles/KWh consumption average over the course of 3 days and ~500 miles. Useful range would be assumed to be 92.12 miles, if you don't mind running out of juice in the middle of the road. Else, subtract ~10-15 % sanity buffer.

THEN, the practical useful range between the two cars is roughly the same!

It does need some self discipline -- sometimes.... -- but is a lot of fun. Does not appear to be many i3 owners on here?

Interesting your comments on range and mi/kWh

Got mine in April and from then till it went in for some work got 4.1 mi/kWh

When I got it back 2 weeks ago the mi/kWh had been reset and I'm now getting only 3.4 mi/kWh I'm driving it just the same except its now cooler so heating is being used.

I'd be interested to know what mi/kWh owners are getting from the app community average is 3.8

In the cold I've lost as much as 53% in range
Now that was negative numbers but even at 30 degrees you'll notice a steep drop. Do the preconditioning of the batteries and it will help your average a bit.

Heating will reduce your range more than the AC

Interesting.
Sounds like you are doing a lot more highway driving than I do in my regular commute.
On a highway, I average somewhere around 3.8-4.0 mi/KWh, but then again, I rarely go below 75 mph (allegedly).

Around town and on back-roads, the mileage sky rockets north of 5.x mi/KWh. My 8.5K mile REX average is 4.5 mi/KWh when I drive. About 20% lower when my SO drives

Yep, I noticed the same thing, except it seams to have crept up to 3.9 lately.

You DO have lower mileage in cold weather, especially when temps drop below 40F. Even with heating turned off, a LOT of energy is consumed keeping the batteries warm and at their optimum temperature range.

Pre-conditioning helps a LOT, but requires an L2 charger.

I will see how low mileage will go in the depth of the winter, when temps dip into 20s and below.

I have a high power charger so I'll try pre-conditioning to see how it improves

The everage had dropped from 4.2 to 4.1 over the previous month (October) so I expect consumption was on the way up.

My motoring generally short distances and plenty of hills some 15%

Picking up my i3 on monday - its a pre registered with only 7 miles on clock and a big discount so well pleased.
also getting the winter wheels on a 428 set - will swap this over the summer in march.
Getting the BMW charger fitted too...bargain at £150.

Will post some pics and figures soon....

Why do you think a BEV will have less residuals?

Was more an observation on prices on the autotrader website.... REX models seem to be holding up more, not much more. Until more charging points are around people will want the "insurance" of REX.

Hi I'm from Gunnislake - I've seen a few around the area

Mines Ionic Silver with all options personal plate *1 CS*

Lets hope more charging points are installed I've yet to get a charge from Ecotricty at Victoria services so far always shows an error
The charging map shows plenty of charging but most are private at work places hotels etc. No DC rapid charge points so far

Technically you could drive to Bristol and back Ecotricity points are every 50 miles but these are just AC chargers so it would be a long trip
Brave decision going Electric only but if just a city car thats fine saying that in the 9000 miles I've driven since April only filled up 3 times

ASDA at St Austell was fine and Waitrose Saltash (Chargenow) but its not worth me subscribing now with a monthly fee as in the last 6 months I've only used them twice

Biggest drawback with the i3 is people wanting to overtake you all the time because you drive sensibly - surprises plenty from the lights though !

I'd recommend the BMW rubber mats - not cheap but excellent

Looking forward to the i8 due in March - also Ionic Silver

I can with certainty say that BEV's will out perform REX models in residuals as time goes on. Why anyone would buy a REX is totally beyond me, BEV's are way faster, better range on electric, whisper quiet, no ICE servicing and with working CCS chargers you can get round almost all of the country.

I did a 180m round trip to LHR T5 in 0º with two CCS stops, worked like a charm and cost me £0

You may be right - it was just an observation from autotraders listings....

Im going to give it a shot to get to Bristol with one stop....130 miles.....

The i8 is something else, but I will keep buying my lottery ticket just for that.

Dont think you will have an overtaking issue with the i8 too.

Will look out for you my is on a GJB plate....

I admire your confidence CCS is that DC High speed the nearest one to us is double our range. I've not had a good experience with charging points and if I had to rely on them I would have been stranded. I suppose around London your are spoilt for choice.

Chargnow maps all shown are AC 7kW or less so a 2 hour charge time at least

Ouch, so yes in your neck of the woods it would be a little more tricky.

I used Ecotricity points which are pretty much at every big services. The real issue is leaf owners who take forever to charge
