BMW to Advertise All-Electric BMW i3 during Super Bowl XLIX

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 15, 2015…
Today, BMW announced plans to feature the all-electric BMW i3 in a 60-second spot during Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, February 1, 2015. After a 4-year hiatus, BMW will be returning to the big game with a commercial during the first quarter.

“As one in three Americans will tune in to watch the Super Bowl, we are thrilled to use this platform to educate viewers on the importance of electric mobility,” said Trudy Hardy, Vice President of Marketing, BMW of North America. “Big ideas like the BMW i3 take a little getting used to, and the creative idea surrounding our spot will play on this analogy.”

BMW i is BMW’s forward-looking and sustainable brand dedicated to solving many of the mobility challenges faced by the world’s most densely populated cities. The BMW i3 is the first of the BMW i vehicles constructed from the ground up primarily of carbon fiber. Currently available in the U.S., the BMW i3 has a starting MSRP of $43,350 (Including $950 Destination and Handling), and the range-extender model has a starting MSRP of $47,200 (Including $950 Destination and Handling).

KBS (kirshenbaum bond senecal + partners) partnered with BMW for the creation of the spot, and UM is responsible for media buying.

It will be interesting to see what mileage claims are made for a full charge. And whether mention will be made of severely reduced distance for cold weather climes. If not I eventually foresee BMW getting sued in a class action lawsuit.

No electric car maker tells customers in plain English (or any language for that matter) that electric range is effected by extreme weather conditions. This is something that is addressed in fine print though. Why would BMW be subject to a CA for following suit? And why would they stop the presses to tell everyone about it in a Super Bowl commercial??

Apple products stop working in extreme weather conditions too, particularly when they get too hot (requiring a cool down period). I don't see that on the front page of the Apple Store site though. Should there be a CA against Apple too?

What is Ford doing in regards to cars such as the i8, NSX, LaFerrari, P1, Porsche 918 and the technology and progression they're making? Nothing. You feel embarrassed (don't know why ) but there is nothing embarrassing about marketing the current trend (performance hybrids/tech) especially when people such as yourself need this tech to trickle down to BMW's "emotionless", "bloated", "Lexus-like" lineup.

Besides all of that, BMW doesn't need to market BMW M or the rest of their lineup. They led sales globally last year, and people who know/want performance already know BMW M so other than having a sexy ad to please someone such as yourself, it does nothing for BMW. BMW i is new and BMW needs to market it.

Price of petrol going through the floor and they decide to waste money trying to get people to buy electric !! What's the point when oil is heading towards $30.

Actually they do need to do it.

All auto makers like to showcase their top tier cars (remember Audi's S6 and S8 commercials at last years?) as it builds hype even more and extends brand awareness and cachet among the public.

I like the i3- I think it's actually kind of cool but would I rather see a super bowl commercial with a black i8
and a gorgeous blond in a black dress getting out of it and saying something incredibly funny to the valet?

ABSOLUTELY......

You all are not or don't want to realizing that electric is the future of cars. Visionaries understand this, and what better place to show case it but the biggest marketing area you can buy.

I'm not saying they don't need to do it, it's just that BMW doesn't need to at this time. If they didn't have the i Brand, I'm sure they would do something that markets something from their core lineup like Audi did with the S6 or S8. Audi might do that again because they don't have another subsidiary or division outside of Quattro.

Just based on the current trend in the automotive sector, doing a commercial for the i Brand is just smart business for not only the BMW i but BMW automobiles as a whole.

BMW likes to spin it that way.

But if you look at inventory at dealerships, the same i3's are just collecting dust on lots. My dealer down the street has 27 i3's and I recognized the same ones every time I take my cars in for service.

They will eventually move units, once they put a $10,000 rebate on them and really good residuals for leasing.

I've seen s bunch on the road already. Smart play for BMW as it brings in customers that might not otherwise purchase a BMW.

Just think of all the Prius drivers that can make the move upscale and still feel green.

It comes down to the market...my local dealer sells a bunch each month because it works in this area. Someplace out in the middle of the USA where the nearest town is 40-50 miles away or further, probably not a good choice. There are some models dealerships just don't market for one reason or another, and some don't want to invest in the required equipment and training both for the shop and the sales people to make it a viable operation.

Some get it, some don't. The i3 was designed as a mega city car, and when used in that environment, it is very reliable and useful. It is not a general purpose car that can take you cross country at the drop of a hat that can also take you to work and back during the week...it only works at getting you back and forth.

Was thinking the same thing, it's like advertising fine wine at a NASCAR event. How about some red blooded M3 doing donuts - now thats a Superbowl commercial!
