Using Plug & Charge

I have the contract downloaded to the car but it seems to take several attempts to charge at Electrify America including fiddling with the BMW app and even calling EA's customer service. I would have thought I could just plug the charging cable in and it would charge like my Tesla does.

Is there a reliable and repeatable sequence of steps that I should be using to charge the iX at EA?

Thanks

P.S.: If there is a line of cars waiting to charge, I suspect some of the drivers behind me are aggravated that I'm wasting their time by fumbling around :-(

It should just work by plugging in. Did you check the button that says to use the plug and charge and did you see the EA contract below that?

If plug and charge is working at that particular EA location, there should be no need for the app, calling, etc. Plug in, the charger will say "communicating with vehicle," and soon after should say "payment authorized." There are times when it doesn't work due to issues on the EA side and/or the BMW side. In those cases you can easily activate using either the EA charging card in your Apple wallet (if you have one), or by using the BMW app in the charging section to activate the charger which should only take a few moments.

Yes to both

It says "communicating with vehicle" but, to get to "payment authorized", I have to use the card in the Apple Wallet. Even then, it sometimes makes me unplug and go through the process again, several times even.

I will try using the BMW app the next time.

Yesterday, the charger stopped 15 minutes into the charging cycle and I had to go through the whole process again.

I would give up except that 140KW is very tempting when I'm near an EA charger

Mine worked 1 time and then shut off 18 minutes in.
Lost plug and charge, got it back a few weeks later but when I tried it , it didn’t work because the EA charger was down (EA got it to work) stopped on its own at 80%.

The BMW app definitely works so even if plug and charge doesn’t pretty simple to start it thru the app.

BMW really didn't make Plug and Charge feature consumer friendly. It is not right after buying a car to call genius, send emails to EA to enable something and ask 20 times your dealership to fix it with zero success.
Mine still shows 'See you dealer to enable' and I gave up.
That's another reason I will never take our IX for a long trip. It's strictly around the town SUV

I agree it could be a hassle but with the BMW app the “charge” starts in 3 seconds. Not a big deal and certainly not a reason to not take the car on a long trip.
I used the app on 5 stops from Florida to NY. The EA certificate was gone so had to use the BMW app. No problem at all.

The iX is a phenomenal long distance cruiser; so damn comfortable. I would never let one thing such as P&C not working as advertised from taking it long distance, since there are so many other ways to rapidly and simply start a charge session at EA.

Without getting into details, that update has some serious potential issues. That at the moment would give me pause for a long trip.

After waiting for months to have the plug and charge software installed and the contract downloaded I also could not get I plug and charge to work at two different chargers but worked with the wallet app. I have not bothered to start calling EI again, just too frustrated.

Bmwno6 have you ever used the MyBMW app or Apple Wallet to initiate a charge? You really don’t save time over Plug N Charge and you should never ever need to call EA to manually initiate a charge nowadays. You’re only saving like 60 seconds by using Plug-N-Charge. From your messages here I’m assuming you don’t have DCFC configured in your app? I can understand the frustration if that’s the case!

He said he got it to work with the wallet app. Not sure if that’s the Apple wallet card or the BMW app.

P&C has not worked at 4 different chargers now. Will try the BMW app next time instead of the Apple wallet card.
