Rumor: BMW planning to attack electric family sedan market with the BMW i5

What we know about BMW's aggressive push into the electric car market (via their dedicated BMW i brand) is that it is essentially a two pronged approach. Cover the exotic sports car market with the BMW i8, to effectively show that an electric car can be a desirable super-car and at the same time produce a compact and efficient city car with the BMW i3.

While both of these cars will do alot to put electric cars into the mindset of car buyers and enthusiasts, the real car market is the mainstream people mover: the family sedan. Autobild.de is reporting that somewhere around year 2015, BMW plans to introduce the BMW i5, a fully electric mid-size people mover that will take a more cross-over shape of the Prius, to create a product that is part sedan, part van and part SUV.

The BMW i5 would be likely to be motivated by a rear-wheel-drive platform utilizing a 170HP electric motor mated to the range extending gas motor producing an additional 90HP.

This is still a rumor at this point, but it makes perfect sense to make a mid-sized car, but it seems the actual shape and configuration are still firmly in the rumor category. What is somewhat scary is Autobild's projected price of "not less than 50,000 . Thats $66,000 USD to you and me.

Good to see BMW looking at the future. I'm liking what BMW is planning for their lineups:

Electric = i-Series
Mainstream = 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, X-Series
Performance = ///M

Well, a Volt starts around $40,000 on a c size chassis, and it's an ugly pig. Why not BMW?

Awesome. In 2015, the BMW line up will probably look like this:

1 series
2 series
3 series
4 series
5 series
6 series
7 series
X1
X3
X4
X5
X6
Z2
Z4
i3
i5
i8

Most of the above with around 10-12 variants. Am I missing anything?

The i8 is pretty badass. IMO they are trying to cover a few bases, the utilitarian family thing and the sporty coupe-- different strokes for different folks. If it takes off, I'm sure BMW would make soething that looks like a 3er but powered by electricity

The proposed shape of this i5 is nothing more then rumor at this point

Good Idea Here

Unless Tesla Motors is blowing hot air with its future Model S's (Eses/Esses?), BMW better "get cracking" on something like this. There is likely to be some cross-over shopping between a 5 series and the Model S as the space, amenities, price and performance will be comparable.

The car/wagon/minivan shape is going to offer the most usable interior space with a low coefficient of drag. BMWs deserves props on the i8 as it has some clever clear covers on its back end sides to create a box-shaped low-drag form without the corresponding boxy appearance.

Also if the batteries are under the floor (the best place for a low center of gravity) then the vehicle has to be taller since the occupants will be seated on top of the batteries. If you have seen a Nissan Leaf in person you will get the idea. The sorta-tall Honda Fit uses this same principle, except the front passengers are sitting on top of a gas tank. I do like the back-window styling on this concept drawing though.

Cheers!

I think this'll be the car with a 2 or 3 cyl engine to increase mileage by charging batteries. They're going to follow the volt idea, but I bet they'll have batteries + engine for "spirited" driving.

But I agree, the shape the needs some love.

I see nothing wrong with the growth of BMW. Infact, I welcome it. They are trying to build models that fit the needs of everyone while offering everything in the modular format they spoke many months ago.

A Z4 is too large/expensive?
We have a Z2 that's just as fun to drive however lacks the power of the Z4.

Need a four door sedan that shows class and money they make both 5 and 7 series.

As for watering the M brand that's just, what I hear from/as people upset that they just bought a V8 M3 that will be null and void with the F30 M3.

You are a fanboy if you think the E9X will be a better car.

BMW if heading in an excellent direction and the
"M performance line" is nothing more than allowing the "car enthusiast" (read Sunday driver) to have their car at a cheaper price.

While the M cars will be pure performance.
We see this In the M5 and the incredible numbers it's putting down.
The M3 will follow suit and you are crazy to believe otherwise

it's a great market plan. The reality, however, it that electric cars won't become a reality, at least in the USA, until mainstream America retakes the cities. When most people get to the point where they can live, work and play, most of the time, within a ten mile radius, electric cars will make a lot of sense. As long as everyone wants 3/4 acres and the suburban lifestyle, electric cars are going to need some kick ass batteries, and America is going to need some serious infrastructure for recharging them. And, hell, we can just barely keep the infrastructure we have in good working order (70% of the nation's bridges are in varying states of disrepair). And if you leave it to the private sector to establish that infrastructure, you'll pine for the days of $5 gas.
