BMW to increase i8 allocation to the US

BMW is increasing the US allocation of i8s by over 1000 for 2015, but that reportedly still will not be enough to fill the demand. To accomplish this, they plan to reduce the number of i3s.

Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW of North America, has said that the wait for an i8 remains at about a year.

While the demand for the i8 is the most obvious, the i3 isn't doing badly either. BMW expects to sell about 1,000 i3s a month in 2015 (in the U.S.). Last year, BMW sold 6,092 i3s and 555 i8s here.

That means it's a hit. And it should be.

Such a looker ~ !

Add the 2L and a stronger eDrive and I might consider one.

Otherwise I just like looking at it for now. If I cannot destroy a M3 in it, no thanks.

The true test will be if bmw can make a fun-to-drive sporty car between i8 and i3, ya know for normal people

What's with the orange LEDs in the news picture? Turn signal in same part as side lights and DRLs?

The other adjustment BMW has made is to produce fewer F8x carbon fiber roofs to help need the i demand

That should be sufficient, the number sounds low until realize that in 08 I had an M5 and 1200 was the US allocation yet there were plenty to go around. 500 i8's will wind up in CA.

555 cars is not a lot, but buyers want them.

Not surprising since the i3 is actually not selling well at all in the US.

The i3 is an amazing car, but it looks like a futuristic 'econobox'. The only issue is the exterior styling, I still don't know what the designers and suites were thinking. Why couldn't they just make it sexy, because it drives great.

That might be because of BMW possibly choosing the wrong DCQC plug standard... Making it not so practical to own, expect for if you maybe live in San Diego California.

I agree. I test drove one and I liked much better than a Prius, but I think the exterior could be improved. People who buys these vehicles (in the US at least) do not want fast and furious colors and stand out from the crowd and that is exactly how BMW decided to shape and color the i3.

I don't get it, the i3 looks just fine with the right wheels and package. Pricey though.

I wouldn't want a "futurey" car that looks like a current car that would be an oxymoron of sorts.

The i3 is a modern interpretation of the future and it's highly functional and roomy. Just wish it got 200 miles of range without that crappy extender.

With that many allocated the i8's will probably depreciate like all the rest of the BMW's now. For those who paid over MSRP they probably just lost more than 100g's.

They probably dont care about losing 100k though unless most of us on the forum. An extra 100K could have been an X5M.
