Lightbulb Frankfurt IAA 2013: BMW i3 Auto Show Debut

By David J. - September 11, 2013

The BMW i3 electric vehicle [Official Thread] has made its auto show debut at the 2013 Frankfurt IAA show.

The 2014 i3 is priced in the US at $41,350 (before any federal/state electric vehicle incentives) and has a base price of 34,950 Euros in Germany.

As you've seen, the heart and highlight of this year's BMW stand at the Frankfurt show is the elevated track which encircles the entire BMW display. BMW allows attendees at the Frankfurt show to sit in the i3 for a ride around the 300 meter (1,000 feet / .18 miles) track, with a BMW driver behind the wheel of course. The cars often hit up to 50 km/h (31 mph). Check out an on-board lap video below.

Guys I gotta tell you I was not looking forward to this car either. I was sort of like Meh... But after seeing, touching and driving inside the i3... I am really a fan of this concept.

BMW will really change what people think an electric car will perform. The car just oozes quality and warmth in its design tones. After riding in one i3 I took a ride in a new Golf... and I could not believe how cheap and plasticy the Golf was! The i3 really is a game changer for the e-(electric) world.

A view of the Infinite Loop.
The i3 is truly a game changer , the concept and entire vision behind the i3 is evident with every aspect.

In reference to the I3 and I8
"BMW is leading in terms of innovation," said Hans-Peter Wodniok, an analyst at Fairesearch GmbH in Kronberg, Germany. "While Audi and Mercedes are lagging, BMW's power to innovate is one of reasons for its success."

Thanks/Danke Dackelone .

Even German Chancellor of Angela Merkel was to visit the stand of the i3 and talk to the CEO of BMW AG Norbert Reithofer.

YuP! I saw Angie, on N-TV.

When you stop and see that VW took their 8K euro UP, and made it a e-wagon... and they want 27K euros for it! Makes the i3 look like a deal! The i3 is a real car that can be used like one. And what I like about it is that it has some real performance. That really can not be said for the other e-cars on the market. I think VAG and MB will be playing the catch up game while BMW continues to innovate in this segment.

It was interesting to stand back and watch as what is a common ritual at major autoshows your most direct competitors coming on to your stand to see what is new and watch their faces and overhear their comments.
Of course the i3 and the i8 had many direct comments especially when those manufactures have took the easy route to electrifying existing production models.

Of course with BMWi we are also launching the BMW eDrive line which will offer existing models as plug-in hybrid as an alternative to BMWi .

The best thing is that many took away from their experience that BMW are truly an innovative and creative manufacturer which is measured by foresight , intelligent thinking and focus on priorities and that is entirely summed up by the i3 and i8. Even on the market today there is nothing visually or in conception as the BMW i3 and i8. As nearly every journalist I spoke to at the IAA mentioned that we have completely turned the original concept of electric mobility on its head , and that the BMWi cars are truly game changers.

The next game change for BMW - Front Wheel Drive.
On the Monday ahead of our internal preview I drove the first FWD BMW and my impressions is that even against its front wheel driven competition , the BMW was more direct than an A3 or Golf, this is going to get interesting over the next few months especially with the launch of the Active Tourer which will also be offered with eDrive down the line.

I totally agree with you Dackelone.

Merkel with interest asked about the materials of the car and the characteristics of the i3, Dr Reithofer.

This car along with his brother i8 are the revolution in cars.
Once Germany is put at the forefront.
BMW of course steals the show at the IAA.
For their hard work, continuos with a dedication that has surprised the world.
BMW has already innovated products like X3 , X6.
Developing a car from scratch, designing, test, materials, modern and high quality has established the parameters in the auto industry.
And what I like about BMW is that it remains fast cars.

The competition cars VAG and MB will have to work hard to match BMW.

Hopefully with this BMW car sales Germany to rise.
I have data KBA BMW sales, the consultants every month.

Someone has to be the leader.

Regards / Grüße.

I second that. Just read the Road and Track review of the car. Pretty abysmal. Oh and by the way...I'm on Google Fiber - 1000Mbps. ;-)

I heard a lot of that at the US premier in NYC. Once people get to see it in person they have a much different opinion. The i3 is going to pull a lot of new customers into the brand for sure. The early ordering in Europe has been very strong, they will have difficulty keeping up with the demand for the first year for sure.

It's much faster and handles better than my ActiveE while also having much more interior room and more luggage space. The range is about the same and you can get the range extender if you need/want more. The wild card is if people in the US are willing to accept the unconventional styling as much as they will in Europe. That's when seeing it in person really makes a difference. It really looks better in person than pictures.

My dealer in NJ already has already started a waiting list and it's more than 6 months out. This bodes well for BMW.
