The BMW i8 made its splash onto the stage during the BMW press conference at the 2013 Frankfurt IAA show in Protonic Blue, but there were several more colors on hand at the show.

Check out the i8 in Crystal White, Ionic Silver and Sophisto Grey. These four colors round out the initial colors available for the i8, which hits US showrooms in Spring 2014 at a starting price of $135,700 (plus destination and handling).

To recap, the BMW i8 is a 2+2-seater hybrid electric sports car capable of generating 266 kW / 362 hp (max. torque: 570 Nm / 420 lb-ft) and covering 0 – 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.4 seconds, combined with fuel economy of: EU fuel consumption: 2.5 litres per 100 km / 94 mpg (US).

Full details of the i8 can be found in our i8 Official Thread and ongoing news/features at: http://www.bimmerpost.com/i8/

I think in Ionic Silver los and highlights the design of the car.
In Sophisto Grey looks more luxurious, but they miss the i8 lines.
Crystal White looks good.
Protonic a blue is fascinating, the car is strong, powerful.

Design is flawless but the performance does not justify the price tag. I like the white one out of the four colors and this car would be a perfect car for a girl or a wife. In my mind, driving a car focused on sustainability than performance works better with the female customers. For guys, driving a green car is great only if the performance of a car is not compromised. Sadly, at that price tag, there are many other cars with higher performance that people can go for and those customers aren't as sensitive to the gas price as the rest of the population.

So for all the people who keep talking about the price being high, I don't know where you're pulling numbers from but here's some numbers for perspective.

R8 V8 130-150k 0-60 4.3 Manufacturer's Specs
991 Carrera 4S 120-140k 0-60 4.3 Manufacturer's Specs

Porsche options are expensive and BMWs are equipped with a lot more things standard.

R8 tech is pretty old now.

And any cars that are significantly faster with this type of styling hit around 160-190k.

Honestly it seems priced just where it needs to be?

Design is really eye catching, beautiful.

I wonder about practicality though. In looking at the pictures can you actually park next to something? Can you pull into a gas station and actually get out without tipping over a pump?

For those of you who have seen it in person what do you think? In the photos it looks to need a pretty substantial birth to open the doors...

Agree that R8 is pretty old now and replacement is on the way.
Also agree that options are lot more expansive on Porsche, however based solely on the base price, 911 Turbo (0-60 3.2 sec) with $148k is closer to $136k of i8 than 4S's base price of $105k.

Argument based on these models of cars can go either way depending on how you look at it but i8's most comparable vehicle Tesla S (0-60 4.4 sec) is only $106k. You can't ignore that fact and just say $136k is not over priced in regards to performance.

Also, if the premium branding didn't matter as much, people can get a Nissan GTR with much better performance or even a Corvette at about half the price of i8. But the fact of the matter is, branding and design do matter. So I can see some people willing to pay a premium for those two qualities in i8 but for a 136k car, performance is underwhelming. Also, it's even more questionable how well i8 will be able to perform with those super skinny tires on track... My Ducati has thicker rear tire than those.

Great point, especially with the R8. I think most people are angry about the fact that you could get something much faster with the money, but this is not what the car is about. It's all about the progressive technology.

Anyway, it's been stated that it's aimed at those with deep pockets, so you can expect most customers to have this car along with additional 100K+ cars in their stable. I think it's pretty much going to be an eco-statement, especially in Hollywood. As soon as Leo DiCaprio gets his, you can be sure that most will follow suit

Off-topic: The R8's exterior still looks fresh, especially in its current face-lifted form. But that interior looks so outdated it's crazy! The front facia looks pretty much the same as the old A3, which is not a good thing. In fact a lot of the Audi cars' interiors look outdated right now. The new A3 with its minimalist interior is the business right now.

Actually the closer competitors would be 918, La Ferrari, and P1 in terms of what the car is about. Hybrid performance vehicles with Supercar styling.

Tesla is a sedan and full electric, so not really the same. The M5 is closer to the Tesla.

Also when in this price range, most cars have a lot of the costs hidden in options.

Most people won't order a stripped down car in this range so I usually go what a "well" equipped vehicle should be, at which point options do factor in.

Considering Porsche charges a lot for the options, the cars are usually not close to MSRP. I see a lot of Carrera 4S in LA at 130-140k even though "base" price is 100ish.

Also you get Eco credit which brings down the price for this Hybrid.

The price is pretty close at that point. It's always nice to have the cars be cheaper but at the same time it's not as crazy as some people seem to make it.

Could it be cheaper? Probably but also at the same time, this model is more about a combination of technologies than raw performance. Which is why this model isn't under the M brand.

To me, it's a mini P1, La Ferrari, or 918, which relatively becomes much cheaper in comparison.

Actually, I was wondering that too. But refueling/recharging seems to happen on the right hand side, so that should be okay for a LHD i8. No idea whether BMW fits the fuel filler/recharger cap on the left hand side for a RHD i8.

And apart from fuel stations, there are also 'garage boxes' and underground parking lots: cars, walls, pillars, etc.
