BMW i8 Standard Equipment, Features and Options

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Some i8 document I was kindly forwarded touts how simplified the the order process is compared to an X1 and and i3, with only 1 model, 2 "worlds", no "packages".

Standard equipment

Navigation Pro
H&K Premium Sound
Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive LED Headlights
Alarm System
Display Key
E-Call + BMW i Services
Electronic Dim/Fold Mirrors
Park Distance Control
Storage Package ?
Lights Package ?

Surround View Cameras
High Beam Assist
Collision Mitigation
Pedestrian Protection

Speed Limit Info

Heads-Up Display
Real-Time Traffic
Connectivity BT/USB Devices
BMW Apps
BMW Remote Servies
Concierge

I don't see the "Eco" tires available, it appears the US is only getting the wider "sport" 215(front),245(rear) rims which are the Turbine Spoke style-625 wheels (my favorite)

or the W-Spoke style 470 wheels

It looks like that default interior is the "Mega" which is "Neso" on the UK site

cloth on the backs of the seat bolsters, less leather, etc.

You then have a choice of "Giga" and "Tera" "Worlds" (just like the i3)

Giga
  • Extended Leather
  • Dark or Light (Black or Ivory) Leather
  • Dark or Light (Black or Ivory) Headliner
Basically the Ivory and Carpo Amido (black) interiors on the UK configuation website. Although the wording makes it sound like you'll be able to get a dark headliner with the dark leather (which makes sense).

Tera
  • Olive Tanned Leather
  • Anthractite Headliner
  • Blue Seat Belts
The Brown/Tan interior some of the show cars had. Called "Halo" on the UK configurator.

If it follows the i3, the Tera will be the most expensive.

It looks like they're really positioning it as a 911 4S and R8 competitor in the literature.

All in all I am VERY pleased with the standard equipment list. A similarly equipped M6 would be getting close in price to an i8.

So it looks like the only thing that will push your sticker above the $135.7k is opting for different interior package. I'm going to guess you'll still be under $140k no matter what.

Awesome info, Carac - thanks for posting. Interesting about the interiors; I was under the impression they'd all be the same cost. With the difference in leather coverage, this makes sense, though.

Some PDFs I was kindly forwarded. Most of it besides the standard equipment was known. Kind of like having the pieces to a puzzle but not knowing how they fit. Now I see the picture and could put it together. The interior prices ($3-4k) are the only thing I extrapolated. Got it from the i3 tiers and what they ask for extended leather in cars like the M5 and M6.

This is the best information available yet, keep the info coming. While I am not the first on the list I am definitely anxious to know as much as possible.

Plus don't forget about the government subsidies we are going to get for the i3 and i8. The i8 should be under $130k fully loaded with the subsidies I'm guessing.

Stupid question but will the i8 have roof slats to affix a roof rack?

The i8 is actually the only car that excites me right now to replace my M3 as my daily driver. But it will need to at least haul my surfboards.

Too expensive. For that price the GTR, R8, or Tesla is a better pick

Then I guess you're free to order either of those nearly 7 year old models that aren't any anyway related to the i8's core philosophy and design or an EV that can only go 300 miles on a "tank" of "fuel" and is a 4-door family sedan next to a 2-door "super car" with M1 design overtones. If I wanted to buy an R8 and GT-R, I would have years ago...

I don't see it that way.

While it's an expensive range topping model, the batteries really make it less of a collectible to me. A Z8 from 2001 is fine today. How will an i8 in 26 hold up? Will the batteries have gone bad as that the car has a negligible range? How much will the cost to replace the batteries be?

"how simplified the the order process is compared to an X1 and and i3, with only 1 model, 2 'worlds', no "packages"."

To me that basically says 'hey you're already buying our most expensive car, so of course you want to pay for all the options, don't worry we've taken care of it for you'. Kinda silly. The part I most enjoyed about custom ordering my car was that I got exactly what I wanted and nothing more. No over-priced navigation system, parking assistant, driver assistance, etc. Thanks, but no thanks.

On the flip-side, I'm much more of the "just give me everything" mentality. Spec-ing out a 911 is aneurysm inducing, the "easiest" being the GT3 and GT3 RS, where everything you'd want in a car built for that purpose is standard.

It could have been worse, they could have made it $135k base with $40k in available options.

Also, it makes it WAAAAAY easier to find a second-hand car when they all come the same. Before I bought a CLK63 Black Series in 2010, the search variables consisted of condition, mileage, and color. No looking for one with the "sport suspension", "upgraded stereo", or "limited-slip" just "what color?"

I'm looking forward to the i8 as a tech statement from BMW in addition to everything else. They're basically saying "here's everything we know that's commercially viable thrown into one car." The latest materials, the latest drivetrain tech, the latest user interface systems, etc.

It looks like the future. It's the first hybrid I would actually drive. And it doesn't cost a million dollars like the P1, 918, and LaFerrari. Done deal for me.

Excellent points, I hadn't thought about the used i8 in 5-10 years aspect, now I can look forward to that possibility! Definitely agree on the 911, when the base price seems so reasonable but then how can you justify not getting all of the wonderful options? And next thing you know the price has doubled.

When I bought my first car, a used '02 325i, I didn't research BMW's enough to know what I was looking at or should be looking for, let alone test drive different options to see what I would actually like. I still loved the car, but I could have done a lot better. The mechanic I took it too said it had the 'Beast' package: non-metallic paint, leatherette, no packages, no options.

Hmmm... Well, M3 it is then. I won't buy a car that I can't have a blast driving around Europe first.

+1 I think it is a bargain supercar; may not be as quick as 458 (or 918) on track, but bet just as much fun to drive and own. Too bad I was so late on the wait list...
