It all comes down to costs.

It's highly likely (almost certainly) that the standard manual tranny used in the new A-Class wouldn't cope with the power and the torque of this AMG 4 cyl engine, and given the popularity of the dual clutch transmissions, and their development by the transmission makers, it's more cost effective to offer the car as DCT, especially given that most people would likely choose the option anyway.
A bespoke designed manual tranny for a transverse layout that could handle that torque would be expensive to develop. Also, the extra ratios offered by DCT suits a high torque turbo engine better.

It's a fwd car in pretty much every respect, only when the system detects front wheel traction loss does a clutch engage and transmit up to 50% of the power to the rear wheels.
