Actually the battery is very well protected and difficult to puncture. Far safer and less vulnerable than a gas tank. If you hit the bottom of the car hard enough to puncture the battery, then that's unlikely to be your main concern, considering an impact of that nature would need to be such a hard hit, that your internal organs, brain, spine, etc would sustain major damage at that velocity. The battery protection can sustain massive impacts. That's also why manufacturers are starting to mess with using the battery "case" as part of the main structure elements of the car.
