Although I've not encountered 'dirty gas pumps/credit card not reading,' I sometimes see pumps with plastic bags over the pump handle letting customers know that the pump is down. I'll admit pumping gas in the cold sucks, but I'll take that 2-3 minutes of gas pumping over the 45-minute charge that isn't even a full battery and multiple 45-minute trips to drive a long distance. I think EVs are great in town and within the city or burb you live in, but I don't think they're that great for those who travel long distances frequently (convenience mostly).
My opinion is that EVs will take off more when offered with more range or a combination of current range and faster charging (such as with solid-state batteries). If you could pull up to a charging/gas station and plug in and drive away with a full charge within 5-10 minutes, you'd be on to something. I don't think Americans (or likely people in general) have the patience to wait 45-1.5 hours for full batteries while traveling.
