My personal experience with 4 different idrive versions across 4 vehicles is that you will undoubtedly eventually hit some bug/issue that will require doing this soft reset (or just shutting down the car for a decent amount of time) in order to workaround it. It is not too big of a deal when it happens once in a blue moon. 4 times in two weeks is excessive IMHO. You should complain to your service department. They will likely not be able to do anything other than potentially update your software earlier than most, but these issues do need to be reported back to them so that BMW can know the extent to which the issues affect users.

As previously noted by
hugo_nz, the head units may be supplied by different manufacturers depending on the region. It seems to happen more often in the US.
