It's a computer, so you may find this necessary occasionally if the system freezes or just acts weird, and it often works to restore it to normal. Sometimes a normal reboot doesn't restore normal operation - you can then try a Diagnostic (hard) reboot, which consists of having the car off, door closed, foot off the brake, and pressing the Start button rapidly 3 times. You should then see a popup in the Instrument Cluster indicating you are in Diagnostic Mode. You then proceed with a normal reboot as above, wait for the main screen to restore, exit and lock the car and wait about an hour (sometimes overnight). This removes (most) running routines and gives the car the opportunity to "reset" after a sleep cycle, and will sometimes restore the system. You will need to check your personal settings and make sure they haven't changed after this type of reboot. The advantage of either is that it only takes a few minutes and often works before a dealer visit or more drastic steps.
Just to clarify - the car needs to be in the drive ready state before starting a normal reboot.
