I queried this too when I had to replace a pair so on my request, the tyre garage called Bridgestone to get further details. Rolling resistance was the answer, they didn’t mention the noise but I guess that may be true too.

I have read a lot of threads from overseas where other tyres are fitted to i8’s but when I have asked in the UK about other tyres, I am always told that you should use the standard Bridgestone for insurance reasons. You are right, we are buying part worns!
