I have read a lot of threads from overseas where other tyres are fitted to i8’s but when I have asked in the UK about other tyres, I am always told that you should use the standard Bridgestone for insurance reasons. You are right, we are buying part worns!
I put a set of Pirellis on mine to replace the Bridgestone, definitely lasting longer and slightly more supple i think too. Exactly the same size and spec as the Bridgestones, so i can't see an insurance issue, sounds like nonsense to me.
