I'm guessing the NFC/RFID hardware will be integrated into the door handles, to recognize your phone. So moving forward, it would be implemented into newer model vehicles and won't be able to be retrofitted easily.
Also, if this completely replaces the key fob, some sort of failsafe would have be designed into the system, incase your phone batteries dies, which certainly would require new hardware and programming.. One would assume..
