The only way that quote makes any sense is if the M8 has a traditional longitudinal engine instead of the i8's transverse engine.
If they move the bulkhead forward (and make it a pure two seater) there should be sufficient space for a straight 6 engine. I think that a V8 would be tight to fit in the transverse position the 3cyl engine is in today though...
