BMW Tech said they had to put on a lift and reach behind the bumper. I'll bet there is a plate with a cable like on either side of the doors for the frunk, but it's probably a security risk that they don't want people to know about for the obvious reasons.
BMW parts catalogue shows a "Bowden Cable" (no. 4) and "Handle" (no. 5).

Sounds like not all i8s are equipped with a emergency release? A bit confusing.
