That being said, from a medical point of view, I have never seen or heard of anything like this before. As horrific as it sounds, falling face-first was what prevented him from dying on the spot (although supposedly he perished hours to days later). The muscle/anterior bone structure of the face absorbed the force of impact and saved him from severing his brainstem. Hard to say if any/how much of his cortical brain is intact - it's possible that he destroyed his prefrontal cortex from the impact.
I was also shocked by the quality of medical care. Why was he intubated but not put on ventilator? Why was he not sedated in the ER? Etc etc
