Just learnt about torpedo juice, very interesting!
The cost of yeast and sugar adds up, if you're buying refined sugar, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up costing more than $1.00 per litre of pure alcohol.
The other problem of growing wort is the time it takes and the large volume of raw materials you need... if you were in the moonshining game, it'd certainly be quicker and easier to start with something that you could buy cheaply and unsuspiciously in large quantities which was already 85% pure alcohol.
... That said, by the time you separated it, filtered it possibly added chemicals then extracted them back out and triple-distilled it; it might be much cheaper, easier and safer to just start with sugar, yeast and water.
