I'm in the market for a second EV, so am definitely interested in i4.
Even though it's not due to hit our shores until late 2021.
However, a few things do not add up.
- 523 hp with dual motors, yet 0-60 is 4+ seconds?
Tesla Model 3 Performance does way better with ~450hp.
Tesla Model 3 AWD does about the same with ~346 hp.
Both weight in at very porky ~4,070 lbs.
How much heavier would i4 have to be to be THAT much slower with a 3-series body? 5,000 lbs?
- My F80 M3 has massive traction issues with 425 hp. Stuffing 523 hp single motor into RWD-only chassis is just pure waste.
- 80 Kwh battery is adequate, but if the car is THAT much heavier than Model 3, how realistic is it to extract 373 mi WLTP / 270 mi EPA range out of it? I suspect the final range will be lower than that.
- Range of ~270 miles may not be as good as that of a Tesla, but might be just good enough. For 2020.
Trouble is, BMW wont be selling i4 until +1.5 years down the road.
By that time, the range is likely to fall further behind what will be the "average" in the marketplace.
Net-net, if BMW prices i4 at a discount to Model 3 (e.g.: below $49K today, likely below $45K in late 2021), i4 will sell.
Trouble is, I don't think BMW NA is mentally prepared to concede that BMW brand has lost premium status vs. Tesla.
So they will likely try to price it at a premium to Model 3. In which case, it will be a yet another attractive EV sales dud, similar to Jag iPace ($69+K) and Audi eTron ($75+K).
