Sadly, the U1 chip that's required to enable the additional functionality will be added in MY2022 and BMW hasn't confirmed exactly which cars either except the new iX I believe. Either way, your car will need to be "upgraded" to the next MY to get the "better" version.

It is another one of those really odd choices over in Munich when it comes to technology. They wanted to be the first to announce support for Apple's CarKey functionality so they can get the headline, but waiting one year would have made the feature actually useful. Instead, they give you a car that feels out of date pretty much as soon as you get your hands on it.

They are still very far behind Tesla on this front. They need to be thinking of their cars more akin to platforms that they are supporting and adding features to over a few years, at least the 4Y factory warranty period, and not treating them as one offs.
