This would make sense. A separate battery for the RFID signal for comfort access to be able to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle, and a larger, rechargeable battery for the actual Display Key functionality.

Another possibility being again a small and separate, though rechargeable battery that only powers the core functions (lock/unlock/signal for start) which gets charged up regularly when the keyfob is charged, but only discharges when the regular battery is dead, allowing the standard key fob functionality to continue to work.

Seems like potentially stranding an i8 owner because they forgot to or couldn't charge the Display Key would be a pretty big engineering blocker from the get-go when putting forth a concept like this.

Providing a "backup" regular key fob is a less elegant solution in my opinion versus added complexity of multiple batteries in the Display Key.
