I watched a Paul Harell video yesterday where he discusses bird shot for home defence and he comes out saying maybe it shouldn't be the first choice but the fact is at less than 20' it clearly gets the job done and yet won't penetrate three walls and exit your home.

Even considering I modified my Benelli M4 so it cycles light loads, I still wouldn't trust birdshot for home defense in a semiautomatic shotgun. For that reason I choose 00 buckshot with a wad (to control dispersion) for my condominium home defense. There are different options out there, this is the Hornady version i currently have loaded...
