I didn't know that you can put them in maintenance mode but doesn't seem a need to when they move so easily and sure not causing any damage doing that as done it several times.
I noticed the same thing when washing my i8. The wipers just seem to be mobile when the car is wet. Then, I go back a few minutes later and I can't move them. I don't know what's up with this. Maybe the rain sensor has something to do with this. But if you want to move them when the car is dry, it sounds like maintenance mode is the only option.
