Yes I know what you mean and I do not have a 100% answer for you.

But I can easily speculate that given error codes with dates and other events are recorded in the vehicle’s memory, most likely vehicle odometer is also recorded....especially the magic 50,000 mile mark, which would be accessed at Dealership if you come in for repair and odometer is over 50,000 miles.

Beyond that, you will notice Carfax and other databases have miles listed from other sources including title transfers, license renewal and emissions tests, just to name a few.

And there is always the possibility of car calling home as speculated above.
