execution is more important, mercedes started at "hey lets add one huge screen" and tried to make their system UX fit which did not work particularly well. especially when dropping below the s-class, which had gotten almost a bespoke UI to make the large screen work

BMW will still have 2 separate screens, just larger, slightly curved and connected by a trim piece to make them look seamless. The idrive 7/8 system naturally has the ability to consume more real estate and BMW has already digitized the displays throughout the line. Whether aesthetically it is preferred or not vs the more "cockpit" look there are few options to increase the size of the displays and keep the current UI concepts.
Will have to see in person how this new dash/screen is but I agree. It's all about execution. When BMW, Mercedes and Audi removed the "hood" over the infotainment screen, it looked terrible on the Mercedes and Audi because both literally slapped a screen on the dash, dead center with no angle. BMW designed the dash with consideration of the screen - we got a well integrated screen that was angled towards the driver.

As for the dual screen, Mercedes did the exact same thing and just slapped it in place of the traditional instrument panel - clearly there was no consideration for it. Audi decided to do its own thing with 3 displays which I find terribly overdone and it takes all but 10 minutes for the novelty to wear off.

With BMW's new setup, hard to say if it's a hit or miss without real world experience but when it comes to these details, BMW just does it better than the other 2 - function over form.
