Can you just do the whole stud-finder bit to set up a wall mount swing arm? I just successfully used a new stud-finder to mount some bicycle hangers in my garage, so I'm pretty confident the one I have works. But screwing up the garage wall and screwing up my home office wall are two very different things.
Drill a small pilot hole if you are concerned. If the drill pulls out wood you should be good. I normally trust stud finders but like to start from different places to zero. A new 40" TV should not weigh much.

These also work well in a pinch. There are different sizes and will tell you the weight they hold.
