Maybe I just didn't wait long enough for the process to complete, and so opening the door manually prematurely interrupted that process.
It depressurises.

The flap will only release when the sensor detects the pressure has dropped enough.

Manual release overrides that.

Needlessly over-engineered, in order to gain a few eco brownie points in terms of emissions
