If it works, you don't have to go through the BMW server to get information from the key. A few months ago the server was down. And there will be places where the car can't connect to the Internet, but it can communicate directly with the fob thing. I would also suspect that there is more functionality but don't know that for sure.

The current i App is nice but it has many shortcomings.

(My genius thinks he found out why I was getting bounced off and had to re log in every friggin day. The fingerprint touch feature was leading to those log outs, so I disabled it and haven't had a problem since.)
