Half true.
It's all about image. Pretending/making it look like you care about being green is "in" right now.
Look at Tesla...their sales are booming, their stock price shot up, and for what? Their car isn't exactly all
that special, and the Tesla S can be optioned for well over $100k! (starting price of 60k is great, but close to double when fully loaded!).
From what I can tell (at least from what I can see in LA), it's all about image, not actually saving money by not getting gas.
