I've been a long time BMW owner, and I am happy with their cars, but I look at Tesla from a different perspective. The Model Y may just be a bloated version of Model 3, but putting aside their lack of creativity with that design, Tesla's innovation is what made it a pioneer for electric vehicles.
The Germans are still the pioneer in automobiles and perhaps will still be the leaders in the next decade, but for EVs they're the fledgling ones behind Tesla, and I'm sure they're very much interested in Tesla's blueprint in their effort to be ahead one day.
