If you want to tow anything large you will need a truck. Most manufacturer tout their towing performance such has 7000lbs or 15000lbs, what they don't tell you is the payload rating. Typically you will run out of payload way before you run out of towing or pulling capacity.

With most SUVs you will be lucky to get 1k payload, typically they will be sub 800lbs. Subtract the weight of all the occupants, strollers, car seats, luggage etc and that's what you have left for whatever you plan to tow. If it's something small and lightweight you are probably fine, but for example our RV has an advertised hitch weight of around 700lbs, but people who have weighed it loaded and ready to go claim it's closer to 1000lbs.
