The difficulty with this is you could buy an M4 which albeit isn't as good looking but quicker and a 330e for efficient daily driving for approx the price of one i8...

While the i8 is beautiful and revolutionary it isn't enough for its price tag in my view. As stunning as the i8 is I'd take the 911 every time, if I'm spending that kind of money IDC about road tax or fuel efficiency. If the i8 was 25% cheaper maybe it'd be a different story
It depends what you are looking for. Performance for dollar, I would agree with you. However, the technology and driving dynamic with 4 different modes cannot be offered in any other sports car or GT for this price point. And that's what is attractive to the buyers of the i8, myself included.
