I think it worked out for both actually:
Alonso is clearly driving fantastic and wants to keep driving for more than one year, which Alpine offered, but Aston Martin offered him a two year deal and I'm sure a lot of money. Alpine is definitely ahead of Aston Martin now BUT next year is next year.
Alpine clearly knows Piastri is the future and they do not have the option of giving ALO more than one year, as Ocon is signed to 2024.
Better for ALO to be at Aston next year.
