Feedback at the Motors by the Moat event I attended today was very positive too, and non i8 owners there all thought the wheels were a factory fit colour option. So I guess they work.
It was the only i8 there by the way
After seeing the car all day on show, I also concluded that the gloss finish in fact worked extremely well and I am now glad I (accidentally) ended up with gloss
