Those were my concerns too. Maybe BMW will provide one Display Key and one regular key (just in case the Display Key's battery dies LOL).
As the i3 owner pointed out, all the functionality of the Display Key is available via the BMW i smart phone app. So I guess we could all live without the Display Key if BMW don't release it to the wider i8 audience.
