Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf is a tourist spot. Lots to see. You can walk up and down the pier and go to a lot of different souvenir shops, etc.. Good seafood. You can take a Bay Cruise that goes around Alcatraz Island and underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
Only a few minutes away by car is Union Square and the downtown area where you can do a lot of shopping and walking around. I think the Pier and downtown will take up pretty much the whole day and going to those two areas would be a good first time visit. Lots of walking so wear some comfortable shoes.
