Don't worry, you'll figure it out as you go. Also keep in mind that you don't necessarily have to find a settlement to find a trader. Every once in awhile you'll stumble upon a caravan that is travelling between settlements - I find that these guys tend to have more good stuff.
Interestingly I find myself not using the power armor much vs. the previous games since it burns through cores. I think I've only taken it out once since the initial Minutemen mission.
