The success of the M2 CS and M5 CS appears to be rewriting history and recalibrating people's opinion of the CS badge. Also perhaps reflecting a trend in motoring journos to prefer some everyday drivability along with track focused design.

The M3 CS in the UK was just the M3 Competition to us in the states, which was widely available. But EVO never liked the CSL during the year it came out and loved the CS the year after.
I think the CSL's image was boosted by its rarity and its engine note. Recent manual conversions with a different final drive (by EverythingM3) has finally helped it unlock its potential.
