It is only a "missed opportunity" if they have tons of space under the hood and not using it as a frunk. And this is not the case here.

It is purely an engineering and a design choice. Maybe related to the fact that iX is using a modified ICE platform. But the space under the hood is fully utilized for its components.

For example, it is their design choice to free up the space under the dash, and no central tunnel between driver and passenger (so you can squeeze from driver to passenger side like in a mini-van). I am sure that they do this partly by relocating things from the cabin to under the hood.
