Actually it is and always has been a golf-based wagon-
5th gen (and before) Golf and Jetta are on same platform, Golf has hatch Jetta has trunk. JSW (Jetta Sport Wagon) also golf based- is wagon.
6th gen (more like 5.5 gen for Golf) Jetta gets its own (cheaper/longer) platform. JSW continues on the Golf platform- its actually just a front fascia refresh of the 5th gen JSW
7th gen- Golf goes MQB, Jetta stays on as mk6 (until very recently), JSW renamed GSW (Golf Sport Wagon) and continues to use Golf platform.
So even though they only just renamed it, its really always been a "golf wagon" in spirit. I do agree with you though, other than mk4 and a couple years in mk5 where they gave the jsw the gti engine its performance has been lacking, I wish we got the Golf R Wagon in the states.
