2,000yds in the pool, good swim. Had the lane to myself!
Average HR 129 for 55 minutes. I want to increase the percentage of flip turns I do. Now I mostly do touch-turns. I get gassed by flip turns, and I can only do 4 of them in a row (100yds), several times in a session. Something to work on next year because I anticipate the end of swim season soon, transitioning to cycling. |

2k yds, good swim. 117avg HR. Empty lane.
Flip turns for the first 100yds of each 400yd set. Next season I will try to achieve all flip turns. Also experimenting with explosive breathing vs continuous breathing as I have done in the past. The theory is with explosive breathing I hold the breath allowing air more residence time for more O2 to diffuse in the lungs, compared with continuous exhalation (similar to normal breathing) where the O2 starts to exit the lungs immediately. |

2,000yds in ~52 minutes, 119 average HR. Good swim. Lane to myself most of the time. I did 5x400 with each set of 400 doing flip turns for the first 100yds. My goal next year will be to do all flip turns by the end of the season.

2k yds in ~53 minutes, 123avg HR. Flip turns for the first 100yds of every 400yd set.
Good swim, had the lane to myself. Weather still not cooperating, on days when I have time to ride! Looking forward to the bike, and for now the pool is what is working. |

2k yds, good swim. Lane to myself. Needed to get in and out of the pool to spend some time diagnosing a failed head gasket on the G01 X3!
130 avg HR for 45min. Rain this afternoon so although it was 70F today it would have been an unpleasant bike ride. Last edited by chassis; 03-29-2025 at 04:47 PM.. |

2000yds in the pool, nice swim.
2x800 + 1x400, flip turns for the first 100yds of each 800, 118HR for approx 45 minutes. I am training for a 1 mile open water swim in the summer, so increasing interval length. I have never swam any type of distance in open water so I want to be prepared. Shared a lane today with an experienced swimmer. |

2000yds: 2x1000yds, personal best for me for longest distance without stopping for breath. In training for a 1.2 mile open water swim this summer. I think I am ready now, but want to build up the mental conditioning for 1.2 miles without stopping. I have no concern about distance from muscle fatigue or cardio points of view.
Lane to myself the entire time! ![]() |

New pair of goggles! Speedo Fastskin Hyper Elite Mirror. A gift from my wife.
Speedo goggles have large, soft and comfortable gaskets - the main feature I like about them. They also seem to use better quality materials for frames, lenses and straps. I had a pair of Tyr goggles which I did not like because the gaskets were narrow and created uncomfortably high pressure on the eye orbit, they didn't seal too well, and the nose bridge was too narrow using the largest bridge piece. Looking forward to trying the new gear! ![]() |

2k yds, good swim. 45 minutes, 138HR avg. Lane to myself the entire time!
New goggles were great - clear (vs old and cloudy) lenses with well-sealing gaskets and a comfortable headband. HR was a bit higher; I was pulling a bit harder for no real reason other than it felt natural. |

I'm not a fan of swimming, but I'm sure if I get going, it can be addicting and worthwhile. Come on, motivation!

I have been a water person all my life but until 7 years ago didn’t swim any yardage to speak of. I was on the swim team in high school, as a diver. I swam sprint races when they needed me, but didn’t train long yardage with the distance swimmers. 7 years ago I started with 400yds per session, in 100yd sets. Most public pools are 25 yds so that means 4 lengths of swimming, then stop for a couple of minutes to catch your breath. Breathing and upper body mechanics for swimming are quite different compared with most other forms of exercise. Therefore go slow and develop your technique. Over time (several years) your breathing and stroke mechanics will improve and you will be able to increase yardage. Last fall I was swimming 2k yards in 400yd sets. Then 2k yards in 500yd sets. Now I am swimming 2k yards without stopping. If you want to do it, do it. You can do it! ![]() |
