Never buy raffle tickets.
I remember being at a Triumph motorcycle raffle with a friend. A kid with a camera went rushing to take a picture of the guy that won moments before they announced the winner. His dad who was one of officers of the club tried to grab him before he leaped. Funny! |

to be clear: I’m not opposed to the Raffle in any way and Club communications regarding it are perfectly fine with me. The Raffle directly benefits the Foundation and BMWNA generously supports it. I’ve been buying tickets for two decades, have never won anything and don’t regret doing it one bit.
my issue is strictly with prize selection which, imo, has gradually become less and less appealing over recent years until last year when for the first time i purchased no tickets. last year was and this year is a pass for me based on personal bias against trucks and tasteless color choices (respectively). more generally though, the trend seems to have been toward expensively modified cars that will no doubt be popular with JDM enthusiasts but i suspect will not appeal to a club majority. i think a poll should be obtained to see how many potential ticket buyers share that opinion. ideally, again imo, prizes would be a free ride on Build-Your-Own to specified MSRP limits. not hard to envision significant accounting and tax issues with that but still, i’d like that a lot. |

It is so funny, my CA just sent me one of these asking if I wanted to trade in. 1 of 1 he told me!

Only if you get a new BMW every 2 years or so. OR if you really like magazines and emails about raffles.

Agree. Discount at the parts counter used to be very valuable but with the proliferation of ecommerce channels by some dealers pretty much wiped that out. No complaints though, online parts is so much better than dealer markups over MSRP.

The classic car raffle BMWCCA added in the last few years has been neat, we have a local winner and I see the car out being used regularly.
I usually throw in for a single ticket, the email campaign frequency suggests the club is mostly staying afloat through raffles and merchandise alone. Ruby Star is not my color of choice on the G80 but my wife is a fan. Still a fun network of people and I used the CCA discount on 2 new car purchases over the years |

+1!!! The Chicago Windy City chapter is active enough that you could pretty much build your whole social life around it if you wanted to.

SoCal chapter used to have preview days at the LA Auto Show... those were an absolute blast! But they haven't done that for a while.
I usually get some raffle tix, a 1:5,500 chance ain't the worst of odds. |

Yes, the Windy City chapter did it, too, for the Chicago Auto Show. It ruined me for going during the public days. It was so cool to be there when only the media was there and there were no crowds to fight!!

Really cool they did that at the CAS as well! Wonder why the shows stopped partnering with them to offer this opportunity. I mean, what a fantastic way to really get fans of the brand to come out and be excited for what must be a minimal expense. Last edited by StradaRedlands; 05-01-2025 at 01:17 AM.. |

If you win the raffle you get a 1099G statement from the BMW CCA for the MSRP of the car and have to report it to the IRS as if it was income. Add excise tax, sales tax, insurance, etc. to the state and federal income tax and most people can't afford to keep the prize.
I won the BMW CCA Raffle in 1992. There was no Grand Prize. There were several prizes that year which were a base E36 325i. I could have taken cash instead of a car. My 1987 325iS was getting tired and I really wanted a new car. I added and paid for options that I wanted to add to the E36. I traded in the E30 to cover sales tax. In the end the E36 was about 1/2 price which was a great deal for me. I really wish they would drop the Grand Prize and go back to having a bunch of prizes that winners could afford to keep.
