What would you get instead that wouldn't suffer from the same issue (high mileage)?
You've already bought the car now and done a load of miles, so is already a sunk cost. |

My miles are 33% ac charging and 77% dc from 20-80%. I'm not bothered by degradation. Is there any long term data on battery or motor failure or bmw goodwill past 100k miles and cost to repair

These cars are only around 3 years old, so there are very few data about how they age. Few cars of any automaker have had early battery or motor failures. In fact, the battery data we have suggest that the batteries will easily outlive the cars. It is the other stuff that is more likely to go, like suspension, cooling systems, etc.
My hot take is that I would continue owning until the car shows any sign of potential chronic issues. I don't think batteries have sudden failure that often, so when it occurs it is a unicorn event. Same with drive units.

Ricerboi here has probably 80k mi on his car by now. He is not active anymore though. I remember him posting some battery stats from the Flow app. They were not too terrible.

You will need to ensure you replace the motor brushes on time and figure out what that service costs. I forget at what mileage they are due to be replaced but you will be one of the first to hit that milestone. I'd suggest maybe looking into various i3 forums for info on long term owners and their experiences. The batteries are likely not the same, the motors are not the same so it will obviously not be a 1 to 1 relation with the iX but can give you an idea of how BMW has treated them. |

It reminds me of the "lifetime" transmission fluid in their transmissions, the M3's routine valve lifter service, plastic timing chain guides, N62 coolant transfer pipe leaks, etc. These are typical design quality failures that make BMW ownership impossible after the warranty. I was hoping the iX was past this, but maybe not.

So yeah I hit 64k miles at the 2 year mark in August. Took it to the dealer for the 2 year brake fluid and vehicle check and they did the TSB’s for steering rack and the battery control module which was good, but parts were backordered for 2 months so I was stuck in an ICE rental for 2 months. I’m at 66k miles now. Definitely driving it 30-50% less as we are turning back to our ICE X5 for many of our road trips since the wife doesn’t want to deal with the stress of charging on road trips (en route and at destination) especially with a toddler. I tend to agree on this. This has been discussed in other threads, but if we need to pay $0.42/kWh at EA even with Pass+ vs. $4/gallon for gas, the difference is $50 for iX vs $60 for ICE X5 for 300 miles. The difference of $10 saves us a ton of headaches and hours of waiting/driving around finding EA or other chargers. So long story short, instead of putting 32k miles/year like I did the first 2 years with the free EA, I’m probably coming down to more like 20k miles/year. I’m very much upside down on the iX ($60k remaining on loan vs ~$42k market value) so I’m going to drive it into the ground. I probably have 2.5 years before I hit the CA battery system warranty limit of 120k miles. The iX will grow more and more into the daily driver and short road trips role (I’m in SoCal so that means up to 120 miles one way to San Diego). Longer road trips will see our X5 in action, which is more comfortable and much roomier in terms of passenger and luggage space along with much less stress on the refueling front. I will eventually replace the F15 X5 with a CPO Pre-LCI X7 40i with ID7 so I can code it for video-in-motion along with tuning that JB4 out. My X5 doesn’t have any ACC/LKA so that’s the only thing that is annoying and the X7 should fix that. That’s going to be a long-term road-tripper until some sort of iX7 comes out with Gen6/7 batteries with 400-500 mile EPA range with effective 250-350 mile winter range. I’m not worried being out of warranty. Like with the steering rack TSB/recalls, BMW is going to fix any fleetwide issues through TSBs. For wear and tear items like the brushless motors. I would imagine they won’t need replacing/service until at least 200k miles. I will cross that bridge when I get there. In terms of highest mileage, our European friends who got the iX’s in 2021 will have the best data. I think I saw one guy in Scandinavia running the iX40 as a taxi with over 200k km with zero issues. The iX has more passenger room than the X5. Cargo/luggage space, sure the X5 has more, less refueling stress for sure as well. |

I just went for my 2y service and the dealer said he got “remedy not available” for my steering column recall. The BMW site is showing my car as affected. The Flow app is now showing my battery at 95.6% but it’s just over 12k mi on my car. Btw, I got the car data from BMW few days ago and the available battery energy (104kW) matches what the app shows me.

Good to know. I don’t think any of us here will run our iX to that mileage, but even if so, the zero maintenance all the years in between justify the cost for that replacement. Most likely a problem for the 2nd/3rd/4th owner.

The lure of doing another 50k miles with no cost than charging and tyres before warranty up is appealing. The car has depreciated 60% of price as new so I don't feel it will depreciate more than another 20%.
The time spent charging on long journeys is a PITA and charging networks erratic( roughly 1.5 hours for every 10 hour driving) agree with family and dogs travel ice is preferable, though it's less tiring in ix due to silence and smoothness of drivetrain. I couldn't drive another car without acc and lka. The implementation is smoother in ix than my other half's 20 X7 with DHP and i prefer the IX's ride quality. If I had driven an ice instead of the IX would have burnt 8500 litres of fuel whereas the rapid chargers and home electricity is 100% solar generated so maybe I'm doing some collateral good too. A thank you card from greta ? Last edited by KRS_SN; 11-22-2024 at 11:25 PM.. |
