EV Navigation routing Tips?
We will go an a short one week trip, and normally I would take the petrol car. But I really want to give the EV experience a chance so maybe we’ll take the iX. However I played a bit with the in car NAV, what a horrible experience (not if you do not need to charge or maybe one stop, but 1000km trip planning was a horrible experience)
I can use CarPlay and ABRP, and that is probably what I end up using, sacrificing battery pre conditioning, what a stupid idea of BMW that you cannot have their NAV + CarPlay NAV active (you can have multiple CarPlay Nav’s active, pretty cool, Apple Maps in HUD and drive cluster and ABRP on the CarPlay display) The ABRP + OBD dongle seems to have upgraded, it get’s now in realtime battery TEMP, Consumption, SOC … way better than a year ago. But I digress, is anyone using the BMW NAV? When I plan a trip it will first calculate the route, then after a while it realizes that it cannot make the trip, and will add charging stops, it’s really cluttered and you need to make sure you filter high power chargers and make sure it will not take you of the highway etc … The App on the phone is a bit better, but still … So who is using it and how is the user experience, for long trips. |

I'm really trying to use the BMW Nav system but the routes it determines leave a lot to be desired. It also seems to greatly favor highways, even for small distances (like one exit). On my route to work, even though they do not have my new office building (Google does!), it really wants me to take the cluttered highway instead of significantly quicker parkways. Worse still, it doesn't pick up on the parkways and keeps insisting I "make a legal U-turn when possible". Google will usually determine the alternative route I'm taking once I pass the highway entrance, not so much with the BMW nav. Once the BMW navigation demanded I turn into an apartment parking lot, insisting it was a popular Arizona deli. It wasn't -- Chompies was a few miles away. The voice instructions also seem to be very chatty but not terribly informative: Google will say "make a right onto such-and-such road" whereas the BMW nav will say "in a half a mile, make a right", then "make your next right", then "make a right".
And is it just me or does the BMW navigation voice sound a little too chipper, like they're from the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation out of a Douglas Adams book? What I'd really love is the ability for eg Google Maps (or, better: ABRP!) to send not just the destination address to the vehicle but the entire planned route. |

I used it for a trip 600 ish kms each way (montreal-toronto) and it was ok for me. I have used it for shorter trips as well where we charged out of an abundance of caution or due to poor planning of the starting state of charge. It worked decently for that but I do suggest double checking where it is taking you. In my case, I always made sure there were alternatives nearby. |

Just a heads up in case it’s not generally known, but today I noticed you can filter / search for many more places in the BMW sat nav. As far as I can see it’s only available from the sat nav input tile when it’s shown after pressing the home button on the centre console.
Just under the input destination there are BMW I symbol a picture of a burger and then three dots. Pressing the three dots opens a new tile which shows more options than those available in the main screen such as fastfood, chemists, hospitals, restaurants etc. |

I don't have an issue with the BMW Nav. My only gripe is that it tends to be very conservative when recommending stops. You need to make sure you set your route preferences and charging preferences. The defaults are VERY conservative and I prefer to arrive at my charge point with about 5-10% SoC so I set the Nav to arrive at a DCFC at 5% and depending on my destination either 10% or 20% on arrival. The car may sill recommend charging stops before you get to the 5% and this is my only issue I have with it. The BMW Nav also does an okay job showing if the charging stations are full or available but this varies as it won't know if a charger is broken and sometimes it will show an available DCFC but instead it may actually be a L2 charger that is free if that L2 that is part of a DCFC site.
I'll still use ABRP and PlugShare to scope out the route but once in the car I'll primarily rely on the BMW Nav.

I don't see much choice on longer journeys that require charging. However flawed no app knows the car better than the BWM navigation.
We are going on a 500 mile trip (800 km) and while I only use Apple Maps in Los Angeles I will use BWM on this trip so the car know when we are going to charge and precondition the battery. By the way is there a signal if the battery is being precondition in anticipation of an upcoming DC charging session? |
